LONDON, Dccemher 8. Editor’s Berlin correspondent says that it is now clear the Eepnhlic has been victorious over the forces of reaction and monarchism. The policy of the new (fovernment will he conciliation, the fulfilment of the treaty and the Dawes obligations. The Social Democrats will he the strongest party in the new Reichstag with a prolmhle train of about thirtylive scats. It is possible the old so-called AVirth Coalition, composed of Social Democrats. Gorman Democrats and the Catholic Centre Party, with the support of various minor parties, will have a very small absolute majority over the opposition even if the latter includes the .German Peoples’ Party which is led by Dr. Stressemann. A significant feature of the election has heen the complete collapse of the 1/udondorffists who have pone over, practically en masse, to the German National Party, which is now the second strongest party in the House. The Communists also lost considerably, chiefly to the Socialist Democrats. They have about forty-five seats compared with sixty-two in the old Reichstag. The Catholic Centre Party maintained its position. The German Democrats, the German Peoples Party, and the Bavarian Peoples Party gained several seats.
There are now three alternatives for the formation of a new Government: Firstly, a big coalition of Social Democrats, German Peoples Party, Centre Party and Democrats; secondly, a AVirth Coalition and thirdly, the continuance ill office of the present Government under Dr. Afarx and Stres.semunn with the benevolent neutrality of the Social Democrats.
