Next Saturday a representative team from Greymouth play Westland on Cass •Square. -M.C’.C. v. AUSTRALIAN XI. [nr TELEGRAPH—PEIt PRESS ASSOCIATION.] BRISBANE, December 0. For the third day of the England v. Australia match, the weather was bright with a cool breeze. The wicket was in perfect order, still favouring the batsmen. There were three thousand spectators when the game resumed, and the crowd grew with great rapidity until the afternoon, when fifteen thousand were present, which is easily a record for a cricket match at Brisbane. The attendances throughout have been most gratifying, and are a good argument in support of Queensland's claim for a test match. Queenslanders were pleased to hear llemlry sav that the wicket was better than Adelaide, which" always is regarded as a batsman's paradise. Up to lunch, fortunes were against the Englishmen, who were unable to master tlie Australian howling. They then had live wickets down lor 151. The best partnership was that of Douglas and Bryan. The former played one of his characteristically patient innings, but he was badly beaten several times, especially by the slow bowler Grimmctt. Douglas seems lated to go out to slow ones, and again fell to one in this match. He was completely beaten by Grimmctt. The hall etnleii around his legs. Bryan played forcibly, but paid for his impetuosity. In bis desire to bring oil' big bits, lie mishit one from Grimmctt and tlie bowler took a good catch. There was an iml'orliinnle incident in the morning. Sutclifle played Richardson on to his pads, and was given out on the wicket-keeper, O'Connor's appeal for leg before, llemlry requested the Englishmen to resume batting, but .Sutcliffe declined. Tt seemed a bad mistake on the part of the umpire.
The spectators looked to llemlren and Chapman, who were together at the lunch adjournment, for sparkling cricket, remembering the free bitting of tlie previous week, llemlren, in the early stages, was troubled by 1 lornibrnok, who was bowling a great length, and most accurately. Alter lunch, the score hounded along merrily, thanks largely to more great hitting Itv Chapman, who pierced the Meld in many places, lie soon overlook llemlren who was content to play like a rock, hut the Middlesex man relaxed to drive Grimmetl over the • sight hoard for six, the only one ol the match so far. The batsmen began to wear the howling down, and they were masters of ii in the latter stages of the partnership. neither being troubled to any great extent. Chapman was always lull of confidence, and led the race for runs, I hough llemlren was not far behind. Just one time. Chapman was well slumped by O’Conlie made bis total brilliantly in 152 minutes, bitting ten fours ami one six. The pair added 117 runs. The fielding of file Australians, with the exception ul Rowe (substi tide lor ThoP'ic-oii. "lice leg was Knocked about \ csterda.*) was al ways high class.
