Forty ta-es ol infectious diseases were reported in the Canterbury West land Health District during the week ended at noon on Monday, as compared with twenty-seven in the previous week. South Canterbury Pneumonia 2, influenza pneumonia 1. No eases were reported in the Ituller Drey, and Westland di-Diels. The Fire Brigade held a practice last evening, Supt. Hrnddon being in charge of a good muster. The steam engine was taken to the stand pipe on (Jibsoii t.luity opposite the Rod Lion Hotel and tested. The engine worked somewhat dillideiilly at first, not throwing much water. All investigation showed that the stand pipe had been interfered with, an empty tobacco tin and a couple of stones being found in the suelit n hose, a grating therein preventing these articles I rum going into the engine. After these were removed a faulty length of suction lioso was also found to need attention. Otherwise the steamer worked well and proved satisfactory. The reprehensible action of some nerson in iiiterlering with tin 1 standpipe is such a wanton olio that it deserves the strongest condemnation and it is well that the obstructions wore discovered when only a practice was being held.
