TIMBERED LAND.

A COUNTY COUNCIL PItOTF.ST. During the course of a special meeting of tile Grey County Council yesterday morning, the engineer, Mr ,1. Higgins. moved: ‘Tlmt the Council protest against the Lands Department's action in Belling or leasing timbered land in sue li a manner as to deprive local bodies of revenue from timber.’’ There had been several cases. lie said, of the Lands Department selling timbered land and allotting the lessees to retain the revenue derived therefrom themselves. That revenue should belong to the local bodies concerned, lie mentioned one instance affecting the Grey County, where quite a substantial amount, running into four figures bad been lost through the action of the Lands Department. The motion was unanimously carried.

Mr Higgins also moved: “That the Council protest against the Minister of Public “Works paying money to sawmillers or others for repairing roads damaged by their traffic, ami ignoring local bodies in tbc matter.”

Mr lliggins staled that people ought not to be allowed to repair liie roads in their own way. The roads were under the Council's control, and should lie maintained and repaired by it only. The motion was carried.
