HOKITIKA D.H. SCHOOL

RECTOR’S REPORT. Ihe Rector (Air Thomas Irvine) ha.s supplied the follow ing report for the previous month : I have to report as follows for Hie month ending November •‘Kith.. 1021: ATTENDANCE. No on Roll: —Primary,—lol hoys, 181 girls, total dro; Secondary-- 2G hoys. dO girls, total (id; Total-217 Lmvs.’ 22.) girls—llo. Everage attendance:—-Primary hoys 103.1. girls 1,0. total d.’IS.-l ; Seeondarv —2.1. r, hoys, ,16.8 girls, total (iO.d. Totals—lol.o hoys, 200. S girls; total d 03.7. The average attendance ha.s been •nut'll interfered with hy an epidemic of whooping ( otigli. A new tank has been placed over the girls' lavatory and the Hushing is now quite satisfactory.

Considerable nuisance has boon cans, ed through stock trespassing on the school grounds. Part of the boundary feme is out of repair and requires attention. It is found also impossible to keepi the gates fastened, as the public make the playground more or less if a

right-of-way. It is also suspected that on more titan one occasion, owners of stock have doljlioratoly o]>oiiod the gates, and turned stock in. Residents too have recently taken the liberty to use tlie Tennis Court on Sundays. Two persons wore ordered off last Sunday. T should recommend that the necessary locks he obtained and all gates ho kept locked when the school is not open.

I am proposing to conduct a school fair on similar lines to that hold last year, tho fluids so raised to lie devoted to school prizes. There was a surplus of £l.l from last year's prize fund.

The Hoard lias directed that the School ho dosed from December 19th. to February 2nd. for Christmas vacation. The public examinations will all have finished by December 12th. It is found almost impossible to keep the secondary pupils in attendance after this. If the Department will allow it, I should recommend that the Secondary School close on December 12th.
