Gilligan won the loss from O'Connor and went in to bat oil a perfect wicket. Tlie English hatting in the early stages was solid, rather than brilliant. The most entertaining and dashing displays were those of lloiidren amt Chapman, who both charmed Unpeople with crisp shots all round the wicket, being particularly strong in front of the wicket. ChapmaiTs breezy innings was a gem, and one of the best ever played in Brisbane. Ilobhs hatted sedately and correctly, hut without brilliance. Samlham was associated with llen<irell in almost a century purl nership and played stylishly, with some beautiful leg glances. The Queensland howlers were always mi the spot, and they commanded respect throughout, making the batsmen play every hull, Ilorniliiook, who was playing for a place in the test team, sent down plenty of good length stuff, nipping quickly from the pitch. Oxenham. Queensland’s best all-round player had the early batsmen in trouble, cleverly disguising bis slow ball. The Queensland fielding was clean and finished, and made runs hard to .get.
