HOKITIKA CHORAL SOCIETY.
INITIAL CONCERT. The Hokitika Choral Society, formed during the year, gave its initial ecincerl in the Opera House last evening. The building lias been improved considerably of late, the upstairs being enlarged. with a tine stairway approach. The* attendance was very good considering 1 lie weather, and the audience judged by tin* applause, greatly enjoyed the programme. The object of the Soc iety is to cultivate* a taste for choral music, and submitted some ton choral liiiinhers of wide variety. There was an opening of three part songs:—“Belfry Tower” (Hatton), “flail Smiling Mom” (SpofI'ortli’), “The* Sabbath Call” (Kreutzor). followed hy “Happy Eyes” (Elgar) and “Lullaby of Life" (Leslie). In the second part the Society rendered “The Miller’s Wooing” (Faring). “El lb>rnilci’’ (Pinsiiiti), “Glorious is Thy Name" (Alnzaiti, ‘‘The Sea Hath it.; Pearls’’ (Pinsiiiti). and “The Long Day Closes” (Sullivan). Air W. E. Perry was the conductor and Airs A\ . Carver the pianiste. All the numbers were received with hearty applause, being greatly enjoyed by those present. There wore some thirty voices in all. and the* Society is to he congratulated on ils opening success, which it is h0p,.,1 is Init a prelude to further appearance.-. later. An orchestra of eleven instruments rendered two selections, and both were well received. All the* vocalists were mice red, while the solo instrumentalists were similarly complimented. The soloists were—Alisses Drake. 1!. Gillooly, Regie*. Airs Harrison. Alessrs Grenney. Gibbons (lluto). Cottle (trombone). Airs Harrison was tribute-el with a double

Reference was made* to the* valuable help of Ihe Orchc-tra. and to the kindness of Air Johnston in placing the theatre so readily at the disposal or the Society. On |,clialf of the* members oT the Choral Society thanks were extended also to (he painstaking conductor, the very capable pianiste and the hard-working secretary (Aliss Davidson). Misses Pascoe* and Gicsc* and Airs Carver were the accompanists for the soloists.
