RKBI'II.DINO IN JAPAN. Reeonstruclion work in the .Japanese cities of Yokohama and Tokio was the subject of remarks made recently by .Ifr T. W. T. Turkey, who was recently* come to New Zealand from Japan.

Mr Turkey states that in both cities temporary wooden shops and buildings are being erected in the many streets. Reinforced concrete buildings which wine not totally destroyed by the earthquake, and which, of course, were not much damaged hv fire, had been repaired. (letterally speaking the people were making the best of tilings,’ and had done surprisingly well. In some quarters of Yokohama, however,, nothing had yet been done, atul not much assistance had been given by the (iovornmciib. It was pathetic- to go into the shops, which were often in charge of quite young men, and see the small stocks that were being carried. Repairs bait been made to the harbour at Yokohama, and there was now considerable shipping at the port.

Mr Titekey said there had been various estimates of time before the traces of the disaster would disappear. Some people thought that tilings would not be normal for another 20 years, hut lie would not he surprised to find that in another three years there would he no sign that anything had been wrong.
