WATERSIDERS’ STRIKE
FRACAS ON -WHARVES. WOMEN TAKE PROMINENT PART. AUSTRALIAN AND N Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION SYDNEY, November 22. Trouble between the Oversea Shipping Labour Bureau and tlie Union Wharf Labourers resulted in a serious fracas on the AVooltoomooloo Wharves on Saturday. A crowd of Unionists, including many women and children awaited the bureau men knocking off work on the steamers Orcades and Port 'William. The two gangs joined forces down the street and they were greeted with cries of "Scab!” and “Blackleg!” the women taking a prominent part, and some missies were thrown. Ten policemen only were present. They did their best to keep order, but they were quickly overpowered. A general mix-lip followed in which hundreds took part. Dozens of persons were knocked down and it was not until strong reinforcements of police arrived and charged the mob that peace was restored. Three men were arrested oil a charge of notions behaviour and assault.
