Mr T. E. v. Seddon of Greynumth was a visitor to Hokitika yesterday. In reply t-i an enquiry. Mr Seddon stated it was His intention to iontest the Westland seat at the next election and he will stand as heretofore, as a Liberal. Mr Seddon stated Dial as the clcelctratc is an extensive one. lie contemplates touring the .sinitlu-in portion of the district after the New Year, in which case lie will cross in Otago by the Haast Bass and return via Canterbury. Mr Seddon mentioned there were many enquiries as to bis intent ions politically, and be- found general satisfaction was expressed when In- slated be- would stand again. lie found bis candidature very favourably received in many dillereiit quarters. A young man named Randall. employed as a timber motor lorry driver, lead a narrow escape- yesterday altcrnoou on Gibson Quay from a serious accident. He was engaged unloading timber on the skids picpnratory to loading railway trucks. During the operations a large rake ol timber which was being moved forward on the skids, over-balanced and I•• 11. Kandall "as uimied imderucath. but fortunately the skids held up the bulk of the timber with a clearance of about nine inches above the Hour, which saved the young man from being crushed. It was a "cry narrow escape, and the accident quite startled these who happened to see it. and wlm ran to the assistance of the young man. and relieved him quickly from his predicament.
The main south road is said to Ivin very good order at present. Rnr(ions of the road at the lower end are exceptiniially goad. In that quarter, also, a number of small culverts have been put in at open crossings which hitherto were always troublesome to motorists. '1 be County pally when south this week discussed the matter and on the initiative of Air Jeffries, it was decided to oiler the- Public- Works Department which controls the section, sufficient concrete- pipes for the work necessary, the- County Council supplying the material at half price to the Government. This is a very generous offer made in the interests of the travelling public generally, and no deiuht will he considered favourably by tbe Department, as it is an excellent opportunity to have the necessary work dune cheaply and expeditiously.
For some time the settlers at Lower Wataroa Gorge have been anxious for road access, in order to get out cream for the Wataroa 1.-ultcr factory. The County Council has been interesting itself in the matter of road construction. The erosion of the Wataroa fiver has however washed away Friend road reserve which was the natural route for the read connection. During the week the (’minty Chairman (Mr Wells) Messrs Jeffries. Orimmond. and Senile. Southern members, and Mr Morpeth. Chief Commission of Crown Bands, visited the locality, met the settlers, and discussed alternative routes tor a read.
