Viscount Jellifoi* was tarewolled tonight bv the Sailors' Friend Society. There was a large gathering. Sir Frederick Chapman, who presided. said great regret was felt at parting with bis Excellency, as his good service to New /.oaland made them feel keenly how much the Empnrt pulled together. Mr .1. W. .lack said that Lord .lolling* had endeared himsell to New Zealanders. and it was a case of “Will you no’ conn* back again.” The Rev. J. Moore. Messrs B. C. Watties and Godfrey also paid tribute. II is Excellency was presented with an address and framed photograph of the city. Replying. (Applause). The mercantile marine had evoked the greatest admiration by the manner in which it performed its duty in face of wlmt might be railed the inhuman dangers malted by an unscrupulous enemy. He eulogised the work accomplished by the Sailors’ Society, and added that the sailor deserved all that was done for him. It was the sailor, lie said that formed the British Empire, the sailor who maintained it. and mice the sailor was let down tbe Empire would be let down. ..
