The first annual general meeting of Ihe Veterinary Association of New Zealand was held with a representative gathering at the Royal Show. Dr C. •I. Reakes presided. A searching discussion nf the newly drafted Veterinary Surgeons Bill, to appear before the house, took place, the association as a liodv agreeing with the clauses as they stood. The following officers were elected;—President. Dr Reakes; Vicepresident, Air A. Al. lirndie; secretary and treasurer, Air W. T. Collins; committee, .Messrs Kerrigan, Snowball and Patterson.

The claims of the Xew Zealand Federated Hotel and Restaurant Employees’ Industrial Association, for a Dominion award, was before tlio Conciliation council to-day. In regard tn holidays, the employees claimed two weeks every twelve months. The employees offered one week. \\ ages constituted the main question. Ail agreement was reached in regard to wages of chefs, cooks, laundresses, and waiters, employed casually, and pantrymen at 15s daily for the first three days, and thereafter ordinary wages. Porters and general hands 15s a day the first three days, and ordinary wages thereafter. The employees asked that overtime lie paid for at the rate of time and a-half for the first three hours, double time thereafter. The employers oiler time and a-half for the first four hours, and double time afterwards.
RAILWAY COAIMISSION. TIALAR U, November fi. The members of the Railway 'Commission, Sir S. Fay and Sir \ invent Raven, arrived in T'imaru this alteriioon from Oainaru, and, after an inspection of the Fairlie line, returned to Tiinaru to-night and heard eonsidcrable evidence submitted by the Chamber of Commerce. CEAIENT WORKS CLOSING. AUCKLAND, November 7. Wilson’s Uoitland Cement Coy., announces it lias been decided to close the Warkworth plant for the manufacture of cement owing to the demand for cement having dropped. The closing of the works alfects sixty employees. some of whom will lie found employment at Portland.
THEFT OF WHISKY*. CHRISTCHURCH, Xov. 7. In the Alagistrate's Court this morning, A Mister Ale.Millan 20. and Jack Pel-rival Lloyd 18, pleaded guilty to breaking into the railway goods sheds and stealing four cases of whisky valued at L'2s. They were committed for sentence. The police stated that tinmen engaged a taxi driver at night and took the cases to a house party of young men and women. A strip ol tin had been ripped olf the goods shed.

IL'lmes Harding, single and aged thirty-live, a farmer of Hishorno, visiting a relative here was found in an outhouse this morning dead with his throat cut. TRAIN SERVICE RENEWED. CATERTOX. November 7. The first train from Wellington since Friday last arrived at Caterton at 11.11 a.m. lo day on schedule time. The difficulties arose mainly through accidental temporary defects after which the Hour was complained about, but all regained their high positions on the markets.
