A report from Westport slates there was a deliberate attempt to poison a deputy hy a miscreant at the Stockton mine on Saturday. The death occurred at the Grey Hospital yesterday morning of Leonard R. Dodson, late of To Kitiga. and formerly of Hokitika, where for several years lie was proprietor of the Empire Hotel in Revoll Street, The deceased, who had been ailing for only a short time, was admitted recently to the hospital. His ago was 77. Ho was a native of Dlenheim, being the youngest son the late Mr 11. 11. Dodson, who represented Marlborough District in Parliament for several years. 'I lie deceased leaves a widow, two daughters, Clare and Una, and one son. Howard, also two sisters residing in Auckland and Melbourne respectively, and one brother Frank, o( Dlenheim.

A notice appears ill this issue with reference to the election of a member of the Canterbury Education Hoard.. In view of a technical point raised by the Auditor-General, some doubt was expressed regarding Mr A\ ild's eligibility to retain his seat on the Hoard. A leading firm of Solicitors in Christchurch advised that in their opinion the Auditor-General s contention was not tenable, hut. to remove all doubt. Unfortunately the committee on the Canterbury side have taken advantage of the election to put, a enudidnt in the field and a poll is therefore neecssarv.
