Mr IV. G. Coburn, a returned soldier, of Wellington, who is now in Hokitika, is compiling a record of all men of Hokitika lloroiigll who have served in the Great War. Soon the names of the boys who returned will not even be a memory and Mr Coburn’s work is a movement to perpetuate the names oi those who returned from the war, together with loose who did not, in group fnnii. for the purpose ol a ISo rough and family record. The work entails a house to house call, and citizens are asked to assist Mr Coburn in this laudable work.
Only twenty-live eases ol infectious disease were notified to the Medical Officer of Health for the Canterbury Westland Health District during tinweek elided at noon on Monday, compared with thirty-one in the previous week and thirty-three the week belore. During the war the employees of the N.Z.F.C.A. raised large sums of money by voluntary subscriptions in order to assist their colleagues who had gone to the front, or their relatives who had perforce to remain at home. When the war ended and all eases requiring assistance had been dealt with, considerable surplus, and the Trustees there was a very considerable surplus, and the 1 raster's of the Fund recently me to discuss the question of the disposal ol this money. It was decided that a Memorial Scholarship would he an eminently suitable way of perpetuating the memory of those members of the stall who had made the supreme sacrifice, and with this object in view, the Canterbury lOduaction Hoard was approached to see if something could he done in this way. The matter was discussed at the last meeting of the Hoard, and it has now been arranged that scholarships, to be called “I he New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association Stall' Memorial Scholarship” will be awarded every year on the.results of the Junior National Scholarship examination. If proposals in the I'.ducatinn Amendment Hill now boiore .Parliament become law, the two scholarships may lie held at the same time, and the total amounts that may be awarded to successful candidates will be £ls for town pupils and £55 for country pupils. The scholarships will be open to pupils who have been attending a primary school in the education District of Canterbury for six mouths prior to the examination, and will be tenable for three years at a public secondary school. As the amount available each year is limited, the number of scholarships to be awarded will depend on the place of residence of the successful candidates. If town pupils head the list, the money will, of course, go further than if country pupils have to be provided for.
