THE FLOUR CASE.
WHEAT CONTROLLER'S EVIDENCE.
BV TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSN'., COPYRIGHT. DUNEDIN, November 4. Giving evidence in the llourmilling ease, William George MacDonald r.aid lie was a Wheat Controller under the Government from January Ist., 1918 to October 31st., 1922. He had been Chairman of the Hoard of Trade from ? March 191 G, and was still Chairman. While being Wheat Controller in October, 1922, he became managing director of Distributors Ltd., holding the office till October last. In his opinion the Government Wheat Control saved the industry from destruction. Control was established to deal with actuaT shortages, and anticipated shortages, if Hour, bran and pollard were not to reach almost famine level. At some stages it was necessary to establish the control system in 1922 and the millers indulged in liliera.l purchases, thinking they could increase their businesses, forgetful that they could not pernta.nentlly increase the flour consumption by this method.
