WEMBLEY CLOSING STAGES. LONDON, Nov. ‘2. Wembley presented a strange scene last night. Innumerable auctions attracted eager buyers, but many stalls and kiosks were already dismantled. This, combined with the bad weather, gave the Exhibition a forlorn appearance.
The great fireworks display had to l>e abandoned. BOOM IN COTTON TRADE. LONDON, November 3. In expectation of a cotton trade revival there is a remarkable boom in shares. Half-a-nn lion Oldham shares were sold on Tuesday. The value of the shares in 2fifi companies lias already nppeciated by L’l ,900,000.
TRAGIC MARRIAGE. LONDON, November 3.
Mrs Ethel Sims, ibe young wife of a Nottinghamshire miner, might claim to have the most tragic marriage record of any woman in England. I Icifirst and second husbands wore killed in the war, while her third was fatally injured in a colliery accident. Ilcr fourtli husband, Arthur Sims, aged 21, lias been sentenced to death for the murder of his wife’s nine-year-old sister, who was found strangled by a bootlace under a hedge. There is no motive for the crime, as Sims and the child were devoted to each other. The jury rejected the plea that Sims’ mind was unbalanced owing to hardship and cruelty endured by him in a German prison camp.
OAMaim: tragedy. OAMAEU, November 3. The condition of Mrs Holmes, victim of Sunday’s tragedy, was slightly improved to-night. Though the bullet lias not yet lieen recovered, the doctors are hopeful that her injuries may not prove fatal. She regained consciousness to-day. Holmes is improving, and lias boon formally remanded on a charge of tittempting suicide.
PEACE NEGOTIATIONS. PEKING, X ovember 3. Peace negotiations are proceeding between Eengyti Hsiaung and Wu Pei Fu. Meanwhile an armistice is being observed.
