LETTERS PATENT PRESENTED. WELLINGTON, October 23. At Government House, Wellington, this morning in the presence of Sir Francis Dell, Sir Robert Stout, Justices Adams and .McGregor and Mr Skerrctt, K.C., the Governor-General presented to Sir William Sim, his letters patent of his knighthood, consequent upon his elevation to the dignity of a Knight Bachelor. Jt had been his Excellency’s intention to make the presentation and investiture at Government House on Saturady evening next, but an earlier ceremony was arranged owing to the necessity of Sir William Sim’s departure for Dunedin to-morrow.
A DEPRAVED CASE. AUCKLAND, October 23.
At the Supreme Court, Elsie Annie Didoes admitted concealment of birth at Pacroa. She said she did not know she had done anything wrong. Perusing the Probation Ollieer’s report Justice llerdmail said it revealed a condition of depravity astonishing in a girl. He granted probation for three voars on condition she remain in a Salvation Army Home lor twelve months and thereafter took a position recommended by the adjutant, and that her amusements be entirely at the satisfaction of the Army officers.
TWO MEN DROWNED. NEW PLYMOUTH. Oct. 22. An accident involving the deaths ol two men. Charles Nicoll. aged fortyfour, and William Foster, aged tlnrtylour. both watersiders and married, occurred off Kawaroa Park this afternoon. The men left early in the afternoon to go fishing in a dinghy, which capsized three hundred yards of shore. Plucky rescue efforts resulted in Foster being brought ashore, lint ho war dead when taken from the water Nicoll was entangled in the dinghy’s gear, tlm body being recovered 'by a launch. The sea was fairly choppy. It is presumed the men were both engaged on one side of the boat, causing the upset. Nicoll had no family. Foster leaves two young children.
CHARGE AGAINST YOUTH. WELLINTOON. Oct. 22
After remands extending over three months, the hearing of the charge against a youth, Clillord Edward liii. of wounding T.eila Reiehol, eight and a-hnlf years, with intent to do grievous bodily harm, took place ill the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Accused pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial. The medical evidence showed that the girl was wounded in the right and left legs. Her injuries were serious. She was now improving, and in six l" 12 months should he fully recovered. Other evidence was that tlu* accused, when arrested, was in a dazed condition. He had wounded himself in the leg. and did not appear to he normal. LOAN POLL CARRIED. AIX’KLAND. Oct. 22. Mount Eden ratepayers, hv o<)(> voles to IS!) carried a poll to raise £100,(K)0 for extension ol drainage in the borough.
RAILWAY COMMISSION
AUCKLAND, Oct.. 22
'flic Railway Commissioners. Sir Sam Fay and Sir Vincent Raven, heard evidence submitted by tbe Chamber of Commerce regarding railway matters, principally of loeal interest. 11 was urged that the Department should issue through consignment notes from island to island, taking ehargo of goods throughout. The need for more sleeper aeeoinniodatioii on main trunk expresses also was urged, 'flu* deputation also advocated that the Department. should tally goods into trucks on wharves and give receipts Tor contents of trucks, obviating the necessity id carting goods from the wharf to the railway yard to obtain receipts. Complaint was made that railway weighbridges were not always accurate.
