VALEDICTORY.
A large number of the friends- of Mr .1. If. Strawbridgo, Government Drainage Engineer, assembled at Keller’s Hotel, yesterday afternoon to bid him farewell on the eve of his departure on promotion to the Auckland district.
Owing to the unavoidable absence of the Mayor, Mr 11. M. Omlson (Deputy Mayor) ably filled the chair, and in a very happy speech, gave Air Strawbridge on behalf of bis friends, as a tangible token of the esteem in which he is held, a substantial memento of his stay in Hokitika, anil expressed the good wishes of those present and of these who had sent apologies for their unavoidable absent o for the future welfare of the guest of honour and the future Airs Strawbridgo—to which AH' Straw bridge most suitably responded. Speeches were also made by Alossrs R. F. Perlman, \V. I). Alackay, and Dr. Teiclielmann, and vaiious toasts were honoured, not forgetting absent friends.
Altogether a very pleasant afternoon was spent, and Hokitika is assured of owe more very firm friend wl'.o will do his best to forward the old town's interests:
