The death of an old Bc<’fi<in resiedlit. in llie person ol Mrs Jane Grnvis. occurred at H'c Rccftnn Hospital on Tuesday morning. The deceased had been in failing health for some considerable time, and her end was not unexpected. Her husband predeceased tier about nine months ago, while she is survived by three sons and two daughters.
The Shipping and Seamens Amendment Act Bill was introduced in the House yesterday morning. It provides that the Govornur-Gciicrnl may. from time to time, make regulations requiring any class of ship registered in New Zealand, or home trade ships, whether registered in New Zealand or not, to lie fitted with wireless telegraph installations. Judging from an enquiry made by a local resident from a good sized girl scholar, and the reply given, Trafalgar Day had not been made a very notable feature among the scholars. A reduction of one penny per twoounce tin in the retail price of pipe tobacco is anticipated by tobacconists as a result of the reduction in the Customs duty on imported cut and plug tobaccos which it is proposed shall come into effect on January 1“ of next year. The general opinion of the trade is that those reductions will lie passed on to the consuming public. This will mean that pipe tobaccos will bo Jd per oz cheaper or one penny less per two-ounce tin than is at present charged.
