PUBLIC MEETING.

DUNEDIN EXHIBITION MOVEMENT. There was a representative gathering at the Town flail yesterday afternoon to meet Air V. 1!. Hayward. Commissioner of the South Seas International Exhibition to he held at Dunedin next year. Those present included Mr G. A. Berry (.Mayor) in the chair, w. .Jeffries. W. ITqiihnrt. .1. W. Morris (’. .). B. Sellers. D. .1. Evans. W. ]>. Muckay. B. Benton. T. W. Bruce, .1. King. J. S. Dalglicsh, and Dr Tcichelmanii. IF Hayward, Cniiiiiiissioncr or Dunedin Exhibition, thanked those present for their attendance and stated he wanted to explain what they were doing in connection with the forthcoming exhibition. It was an international one. and a general Dominion one. The Federated Chamber or British Industries have oflered to arrange n representative display of Bi itish'liuliistries. and the Japanese Department uf Internal Affairs had applied for an acre of land for an exhibit. A large area was set apart for the amusement park and attractions wore being secured from England and America. . . Regarding a AYcst Coast exhibit, he told also met a gathering at Grevmoutli the previous day. when it had been :,<'.o"d to co-opm-ate with regard to a West Coast exhibit. Incidentally he wished to mention that the Forest Service was proposing to erect a timber dry in" kiln at some place, and ho thought personally that ii should be erected on the A\ esl Coast. Reference was made to the erection of provincial courts, and the opinion voiced that the West Coast one should extend so as to include as far north as Poller. A very tine display should he able to h> made, including coal, timber, gold, and the dairy indusry. The exhibition bindings were well under wav. mill the whole outlook was that the exhibition was going to he an unqualified success. Although there had been romo hostility in some parts it had not boon serious, nod what there was. was fast dying :uvay. Tn the ease of farmers’ exhibits a certain amount of free space would he given. The charge for space ranges from os to Bis per foot. There was a discount of 13 v*r cent, for provincial displays. 'The Exhibition would open in November l!l’o. and will he open for about six months. The question of accommodation was being earel’ullv looked info, and a comprehensive arrangement was being made for the housing of visitors, it being recogni-cd that this was a matter that required their careful attention. ][e expressed his desire to he questioned on any matter he had not made clear.

He had pleasure in moving that a vote of thank's be accorded to Mr Havward lor the bell) be bad given. Seconded by Dr Teielielmann and carried by acclamation.

In acknowledging the vote Mr Hayward expressed his pleasure when ho had heard the exhibition had been successful and had shown a profit. Mr .Telfries moved that tlm meeting was in sympathy with the Dunedin I* xhibition and that this meeting asks the standing committee of the Hokitika Exhibition to take in hand the proper representation of the district at Dunedin Exhibition. Mr T. IV. Brin e seconded the motion. He did not think the representation of the district could he left in better bauds. The motion was agreed to. Til reply to Mr Jeffries Mr Hayward said tboro would be no ghiectinn to the appointment of a West Coast representativtt to act with the Dunedin Executive. Mr Wild said he thought it fitting that thev should voice their appreciation of the action of the Executive in making the exhibition an international one. The members had shown courage in throwing open competition to the whole world and be would move accordingly. Seconded by Mr Almkay and carried. Mr llavward expressed bis tbank's for ibis appreciative vote. He thanked those present, for their attendance on such a wet afternoon. A vote of thanks to tin' chair terminated the proceedings.
