Bussell called on her several times and raised her hones by assuring her that she was “different'’ and “interesting.” AH went well until Alice’s ambitious but tactless mother invited Bussell to dinner. It was n hot evening, the heavy dinner was miserably served and everything went wrong. All along Alice had pretended to Bussell—she had painted the Adamses in false colours, hut now the situation was revealed as it really was. Old Vigil Adams the father, hail been goaded by the mother into undertaking a business venture that threatened the tamily with disgrace. At last, came (lie awakening for Alice'.
