BOWLING.

OPENING OF SEASON

The Hokitika Bowling Club opened the season on Saturday aftciioon, when the clay was fine, with a heavy wind blowing. The green rolled out very well when the heavy rain of Friday and the early morning was taken into account. Way had only concluded a few minutes when there was a shower.

There was a fair attendance of lady supporters present. The President (Mr G. H. Blank) in a brief speech before play was commenced declared the season opened, stating the Club took the opportunity of expressing appreciation of the support accorded by the ladies in the past, whose efforts had been mainlv responsible for the reduction of the overdraft in the past three years by the sum of £IBO. The Club had hopes of a busy season as the West Coast tournament was to he played on the local green and they would again have to look to the ladies for their generous assistance on that occasion when lie was sure their hearty support would be forthcoming. He would ask Mrs Blank to roll up the Jack and declare the season open. Mrs Blank then rolled up the first hall amidst applause. Aiternoou tea was kindly provided by the wives of the President and Vice President (Mesdames Blank and Stevenson) and the visitors and players fully appreciated the excellent provision made for their comfort.

After the tea adjournment the President made the presentation of the Duncan Cup to last, season’s singles champion, Mr If. A. Thompson, to bold for the year, congratulating Mr Thompson on his success and expressing the hope that lie would do his utmost to hold it against all comers. Mr Thompson briefly replied stating he had tried for several years before being successful in winning the coveted trophy.

The usual opening game was played, —President v. Vice President, which resulted ill a win for the latter by six points, the details being a.s follows:
