Tiie proclamation declaring notes of certain banks to be legal tender expires on January next, and it is probable that legislation will be introduced daring the present session to renew the statutory provision (says the “Dominion”). The official date of tile termination of the war. was fixed bv proclamation and gazetted as January 10. 1020. The last proclamation declaring notes to be legal tender was gazetted on December 4th. 1017. and covered the period of five years, which expired on December 31st. 1022. The proclamation extending the period to January lOlli. 102.1. was therefore necessary to carry out the direction of Parliament. as enacted in 1017. The necessity for action this session has not been overlooked by the banks or the Treasury. The statntorv validation of an extension will he a small matter and cannot lie contentious, since a return to the gold standard at the present time is not considered practicable.
