The death took place on Thursday at the (('Conor Home. Westport, of a pioneer who played in his day no mean part in the making of the West Coast, in the person of Mr John Maher. Till three weeks ago he Imd been residing in Wellington, hut formerly was a will-known ligure in Westland, Grey and lluller. Horn 81 years ago, in l.imerick, Ireland, the late John .Maher (familiarly known as ■•Johnny”) came lo New Zealand in and soon engaged in contracting work, one of the undertakings put through his hands being a Clo.0(10 job on the harbour works at Hokitika, where with his brother .Michael, lie was llio-owner of a middle steamer and engaged in bridge building and other works. Among the contracts completed b.v him in Holler were the erection of the Cape Foulwind Lighthouse, and the construction of "The Overflow,” three miles from Westport, of the siophank. lie silent some time in Westralia, hut for years oast had lived in Wellington. where he recently expressed the wish to pass the lasi days of his life on the Coast where he had spent the best days of his fife. Thus, he entered the O'Conor Home, only a few weeks since just in time to realise his wish. Formerly lie was associated with another leading contractor, .Maurice O’Connor, while he is survived by two sisters and one brother, the latter being Air Denis Maher, the proprietor of the Panama Hotel, Wellington.

An accident occurred yesterday afternoon when the 1.30 p.m. Blackball train was nearing the Ngahcrc Bridge. Air Pfaff, of Aliaura. was leading a horse off the bridge towards Blackball. and the train being too heavy io cheek quickly, it struck the horse and hilled the animal. Air J’falf had a narrow escape, just getting clear ot the track in time to avoid the train.
