DOMINION ITEMS.

[by TELEORAPD—ter TRESS ASSOCIATION'. WELLINGTON BURGLARY. W KI.I.INC,'TON. Sept. 21. Another city burglary, pcrpctnited hy an intruder possessing a knowledge of the lay of the promises, occurred last night. Motley was the object of the visit, l ut fortunately only a small amount of cash was in the shop till at the time.

The place entered was a supply store conducted hy Airs L. Watlcin, Id. Majorihanks Street. The shop had been •left locked and unoccupied between 7 p.m. and It) p.m. and when one of the members of the family returned lit* noticed a glimmer of light in the vicinity of the storeroom. Believing it to he nulling more than a reflection lie gave the matter no further attention, hu upon entering the kitchen found one of the windows wide open. It appears that t.lie miscreant passed along tlie side* alleyway, sealed a barricaded crate and commenced worlc with a jemmy. The task of prising open the window most have presented difficulties. since, in addition to the customary catch, it iiad been secured hy a large nail. Kxaniiiiatiun of tlie shop showed that the thief filled the easli register of £.l in silver, noil lielpeil himself as well to several packets of cigarettes, tins of tobacco, and a piece of bacon on the counter. The till had been disarranged, presumably in search for paper money.

KARLS' I’<ITATOKS. AUCKLAND, September ID. A hunt ten days ago Btikeknlie’s early potato season started, and ill the preset)!, time two trucks a day are leaving the station. The price works out at L‘2S per ten, or .‘ld per pound. The early samples are very good, hut during the past week Hie weather has been rather muggy and sultry, and Might is prevalent.. If the weather continues as it is at present, the crops will stiller, and the price will firln accordingly. Then* i- no crop that is such a lottery as early potato growing in the Bukeko l '<* dislriel. Cases are now i n record where a farmer has netted a thousand pounds from ten acres of land in one year. Again, there are eases where, through blight and a had market., farmers have worked hard for a year and lost money at the same lime. In most eases the crop will at least pay expenses, and leave a small margin of profit. The best market lor the I’ltkeltohe potatoes is along the Alain Trunk railway from I’rankton to Wellington. All towns oil the railway purchase and consume large quantities of potatoes. Auckland is also a market for potatoes, lint as the Auckland market draws from Baiuntire and Avondale, it is not mi steady as the Wellington market.

SK KI.KT'ON l*'( li'ND. A I ( K LAND, September IS. The skeleton of an unknown man, apparently iilmut forty years of age, has been found within seven yards of

the railway line midway hetwoei llium ra and Okoroire. The only pos sible means of identification are ai imitation leather pocket-honk issue, wiili ihe compliments of Williams am Kettle, Ltd., a lull set. of false teeth a grey suit and a brown hat. Tilt deceased had been a man abutil oft 9in in height. The hat and a poisoi bottle were found alongside hut the stopper was still in and not the slight est trace of poison was left in it.

The police are of opinion that the deceased fell off the train and the body rolled to the position where it was found. I)r l.niiienson states that deceased had been dead not less than six months, and possibly up to twelve. A remarkable fact in connection with the mystery is that, although the body was so dose to the main Tiran-llinu-era road and railway, it had not been discovered sooner. There is no dense growth within some yards of the spot and the remains could he seen from the road. Probably in summer time the place was overgrown with grass and it is possible the body had been found previously and the finder had retrained from informing the police, hut this also is purely surmise. There wore no marks of injury to the skull or limbs.

NO RNEACTI OF AWARD. A\ ELLINGTON, September IS. Judgment was given in a case in which the Seamen’s Union proceeded against Richardson and Company- of Napier, for alleged breach of the seamen’s award in connection with the articles of the steamer Rnru, which it was alleged were changed at sea, whereby payment was made for eighteen instead of nineteen days. Tlte Magistrate had that the plaintiff’s ease had not been established. He pointed out that Clauso 10 ( which

governed the case, said that for the purpose of calculating payments for broken periods a calendar month shall he calculated as thirty days. Me held that the periods in dispute constituted broken periods within the meaning of this clause. Xo breach of award had been committed. PXKF.M OX 10 1 XFLI’EXZA. WELLINGTON, September ltd. Alarming statements have been circulated about the pravalence of pneumonia inlluen/.a in Svdnev and the absence of precautions in inspecting passengers arriving in Xew Zealand. The Health authorities state there is an understanding between Xew Zealand and Australia to immediately notify anything approaching tin epidemic and no such intimation hits Iteen received from Australia and apparently they tire disposed to regard the statements ns exaggerated.
