CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Canterbury Education Board was held on Erirlav at .Christchurch. Present;— Messrs If. .1. Hipnell (chairman), \Y. A. Hanks, .). .Maze*. (!. \Y. Armitnpo. E. If. A circular was received from the Department regarding vacancies for 1923, and it was resolved to approve of the following elates:—lst. term: !)th. May to f? I tli. A fay (2 weeks); 2nd. term*. 22m1. August to 13th. September (3 weeks) ; 3rd .term : 23rd. December to 2nd. February (0 weeks). The report was adopted. ATTENDANCE RKI’ORTS. Air Alaekay (West (toast) reported having visited 13 schools, interviewed 17 parents, and instituted court proceedings in one case during the month.
A letter was received from the Department advising that it was now prepared to give favourable consideration to applications for subsidy on local routrileilions towards cost of erecting necessary dental rooms.
The Department wrote intimating that, when grants are being considered fur new buildings or additions to existing buildings, it is prepared to consider applications for provision of chairs and table's for infant classes in lieu of desks. A circular was received from the Department. advising that in future it is prepared to find up to one-third of the cost of provision of septic* tanks in approved eases, the remaining two-thirds to he borne by the Board’s Maintenance Fund and by voluntary contributions. ft was resolved to write to tin* Department pointing out* that there was no possibility of the Board finding anything for this class of work, the .Maintenance Fund being required for legitimate buildings maintenance purpose's.
The Goldsborough Committee wrote asking that a householder should Ik* warned against disturbing the school. The committee .stated that a mother and her children had been trying to dominate the school, and that the progress ol the whole school was retarded. One of the hoys was sent hone* for disobedience*. and the* mother disturbed the school in school Imurs. The buy had apologised, hut the mother refused to apologise.
