Hutkinson 1 Resident Engineer of the Public Works Depart men t). 1.. Dell. (Inungalilia), .J. Higgins (drey), and D. .1. Archer (Duller). .Mr Watkinson was appointed C'liairman in stu cession of .Mr .1. D. dillies. A letter was received from the Engineer in charge of the l’uhlic Works Ilep.irtmeiit. expressing appreciation of the services rendered hy .Mr (Sillies, as representative of the Department on the .Main I linkways Coiincil. .Mr Higgins moved that a resolution he recorded of the Denial's appreciation of the splendid work done hy .Mr (Sillies. In seconding the motion. Mr Arclier paid a tribute to the work of .Mr (Sillies. As an ex-Chairman of the Duller County Council, lie could safely state that .Mr (Sillies had always shown consideration in matters affecting the County. The motion was carried unanimously.
The Chairman of the .Main Highways Hoard wrote stating that the Grey County Council’s claim for £b.'t7 lor highways niaiuteiiallce had been paid.
'I Sic Chairman: The claims from luung'uhuu have also been met. Mr Dell asked whether in the event of the sums allocated hy the Hoard for the carrying out of certain works proving insullicieiit, the Hoard would meet the additional cost.
The Chairman explained that local ho lies liad only to liud a sum c(|tinl to the average expendil lire incurred on the maintenance ol tin* main highways for the [iast three years. In Inangahua. it would only amount to about £8:!.
It was decided to ask tin* Hoard lor a rulin'' on the <|iiostion raised hy Mr Dell.
The Chairman of the Main I linkways Hoard wrote staling that it was in lavour of tile same rate ol wages as paid hy local bodies in the past, being maintained in the future, except in instances where such wages exceeded the Arbitration Court award. The D ull'd notiiied that the an!units set aside for tar-sea lino would now l>. expended on replacement and repair of bridges on the Westport-Karnmea. Westport-Nelsoii. and l uangahua-W ailio roads.
The Set retarv of the Greymoiilh Draiich of the Canterbury Automobile Association, wrote stressing the necessity for bridging Granite Creek, near Ferguson's. on tlm Main South road. Decently live cars had been stuck up tltcre. The Chairman said a reply had been sent by Mr (iillies station Grnnita Creek was only small and had not given trouble in the [last. There were many more creeks in the vicinity which were in more need ol bridging. It was decided to endorse the action of Mr (lillies.
Mr Arch o delivered an eliinhutic protest against the carrying of the Motor \ chicles Dill in its present form.
