FRIDAY, SKPT. 12th. The Council met at S p.m. Present —Messrs (!. A. l'erry (Mayor), Couksnn, King. Evans. Jeffries, Alaekay, Perliam, and Heinz. From .Mrs Fitzsimmons asking for permission to erect a verandah in frontof Opera House.—'Received: request granted under usual conditions. From .1. 15. Baird and others asking for improved drain accommodation in 'faltered Street, and that the 18-in. drain from the river to the Library he continued up Tattered Street.— Received; a reply to lie sent stating attention would he given in due course, as previously arranged.

From Automobile Association. Westland branch, asking the Council to appoint parking places lor cars in the town, and suggesting suitable places as Hamilton Street, west of Tnncred Street; Weld Street, between Retell anil Tnncred streets; and (Sewell street between Hamilton and W eld Streets.— Received. Mi* Cmil.sim asked if Weld Street near Kellers hotel was not already allowed.

Mr 'Kvans said suitable places were required, especially to do away with ears standing in front of ilie theatre, where, in the ease of a panic arising inside there would he a likelihood of serious damage occurring. Mr IVrliam supported the proposal. One speeial reason for the proposal was to do away with the necessity of having cars lighted when standing tit nigtiL. •Street lias been completed, live chains new drain cut, and four chains deepened to carry otf storm water, two chains of 12-inch concrete pipes have also been laid across Spencer Street in connection with tfhis work. Fitzherbcrt Street lias been cleaned up and widened between Stnlford and Weld Streets and now only requires a light coat of beach gravel to complete it. Pipes have been laid three chains beyond whore the contract terminated in Sale Street drain above Park Street, to pass all occupied sections. The lootpath in Sale Street has been finished along the Western side of Sale Street a distance of about fifteen chains, and tho drain tilled. During the month the contractor fur gravel supply delivered about 7IK) loads in places where required. -,-Halford Street, Quay, Livingstone St! cel and South Road have boon raked in with the king drag ami arc* now in fair order. Two men were employed for one week tit drainage work on Cass Square under the supervision of the Caretaker, laying field pipes. In the past month about six chains of concrete pipes have been made and there are now on hand about fifteen chains ready for future use. During the month Sewell Street drain collapsed opposite the High School property. This drain is in tt bad condition, the top covering being badly decayed. Repairs to the water service, street cleaning and general maintenance work have also heen attended to during the month.—Received. In answer to an enquiry in regard to Boaley Street drain, tho Town Clerk stated Air Macfarlanc had nearly completed the plans for the work. ATr Jeffries objected to a verbal report, lie thought written reports should be .supplied. Tt, was resolved that tenders he invited for the work when the plans were completed. Mr Evans moved on lieludf of the Reserves Committee that a letter of thanks he forwarded to Aliss Marion Davies for the gift of a weeping ash tree for Cass Square. Seconded by the Mayor and carried. Air Evans enquired what action the Council proposed to take fer the removal of the pound. The neighbors complained of the noise there. He understood that it had been resolved to remove the pound to another site some two years ago hut nothing had heen done. Air Heinz moved that no cattle he impounded till the pound is shifted to a new site. Seconded hy the .Mayor.
