LORD J E 1,1.1 COE’S REMARK'S. WELLINGTON, Sep. 2. A conlcreilce of delegates of the Royal New Zealand Society |'or the Health of Women amt Children was opened this minting. It was til tended by 120 delegates. The Mayor, .Mr R. A. Wright, welcomed the delegates, and the Governor-General and Lady Jellieoe were present at the opening of

proceedings. In the course of ail address, Lord Jellieoe referred to the satisfactory reduction during recent years in infantile mortality. He said that in the Australian Commoinvealth the average death rate of infants was eighteen per thousand, and in liritain and the United Stales fifteen per thousand, whereas in New Zealand during the past two years it was 1.2 per thousand, lie expressed the opinion that the sooner other countries adopted tin* methods in vogue in New Zealand the hcttei it would lie for all. Sir .Maui Pminire, Minister of Health, said that his aim as Minister was to foster anil strengthen the ties between the Plmikct Society and the Department. In regard to'maternal mcrtality he felt confident that a vast change lor the hotter would he brought about in the near future, and that in that reform the Pliinket Society working in conjunction with the Department. would play a very important part. Addresses were also delivered by Dt T. 11. A. Valintiao, Director-General of Health: Dr Trilby King, and Dr J. S. Elliott, president ol the Wellington branch of the Rritish Medical Association. Dr Elliott said that the work of the Pliinket Society had been largely educative and preventive, and that, combined with a parental care anil natural feed ing they had prevented a great deal of sickness and large expenditure, lie spoke highly of the work ol the soeielv
