California, a group of astronomers, who were following telescopic and phctogiaphie studies ot Mars in oppc.sitinn (as cabled August 2.’t) have announced tlieir belief that Mai’s is not inhabited, 'they assert that the so-called canals, many of which are on bundled miles wide, were built by nature, thus contradicting the notion of the existence of animal or human life on Mars. They declare that it i< unlikely, that Martian engineers built the canals. The astronomers add that their observations and ] hotogr.’iplis. virtually establish the fact that Mars has clouds and atmospheric conditions similar to ours. Mars also has rivers, mountains land and sea.

A telegram from Quebec says that Vice-Admiral Field interviewed, said: There is a growing sentiment in Canada in favour of Canadian participation in a scheme for naval defence, and practical expression will he given to that sentiment when the Canadian overseas export trade has assumed larger proportions. He said he based his opinion on conversations with Canadians all over the Dominion. He realised the question was now largely one of expense.
