THE PLANET MARS.
lUSTHALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION NEW YORK. August 22. Doctor Cehlentz. also of Lowell Lniver.sity, expresses the same opinion „;i ■> Professor Lamplaml. OBSERVING THE PLANET. YANCOt-YEE. August 22. A message from the Flagstad. Arizona. reports a formal statement issued from l^iwell Observatory which says: Many observed phenomena of Alars, are similar to those we would expect to sec in coricspondiiig seasonal activities on different parts of our own planet, if viewed from space as we observe Alars. The average temperature of Alars is ab-nil. forty-eight degrees Fahrenheit. Such a figure seems to he in reasonable accord with the observed phenomena. Tbe morning side of the planet is at a lower temperature il.au the afternoon side, which has been longer ex) used to the suit s rays. The dark regions show higher temporal lire readings than the light ones and a gradual rise in temperature is recorded on the surface of the Southern Hemisphere, where summer is now advanced. Extensive visual photographic observations revealed the interesting extensive cloud phenomena, melting of the South Polar caps, aiul yvidesprend changes in the Alartiau surfaco, features which may be seasonal 01 otherwise. WASHINGTON. August 22. Powerful radio stations, both army am! navy, will .stand by on Monday to listen in I'nr | nssible signals frutii Alars. NEW YORK. Aug. 22. Doctor Coblontz. also of i.owell Cniversity. expressed tbe same opinion (re Alars) as Professor Lamplaml. Air Hamilton deduces, from (Twinges which oceur. that the Martian polar -now cap melts every morning, and reforms in the evening, thus daily iri'igaling the canals.
‘‘The 'fillies” in a leading article, points out that this docs nor- mean that the canals on Alars were made purposely fur irrigation and still -less for agriculture. It i< stretching the inference to assert- I lint the canals have I icon made and used intelligently, tluis inferring ilia: rational beings inhabitthe phi Met.
,n STERIOI'S SIGNALS. NEW YORK. Aug
A telegram I rout Newark. New Jersey. says that signals of a mysterious origin have been received with peculiar lrei|iiemy by the radio operators at the station who are keeping watch in an endeavour to listen in on Mars. The signals are distinctly heard, on a wave length ot twenty-live thousand met res.
MESSAGES IAI ROSSI BUT TO RECORD. BI*KNOS AYRES. Aug. 211
