HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FRIDAY. AUG. 22m1. The Council met at 7.15 p.m. Present .Messrs G. A. Perry (.Mayor), .1. King. W. Jeffries, D. J. Evans. 1L F. Perliam. W. D. Alackav, J. Lloyd. G. Heinz. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondeiu e approved. DEPUTATION. Mr Janies Smith waited on tbe Council in reference to it former complaint against overhanging trees on the roadway near bis property. Air Heinz u-pnrted having viewed the posiion. and stated that he bad asked Air Swettey to lop some of the trees so as not to interfere with traffic, lie thought that this was as far as the Council could go. Mr Alackav said he was very much in sympathy will Air Smith ill fiis complaint. After discu-rion Air Heinz moved that the Council visit tbo ground and inspect the cause ot the complaint. Seconded liv Alt' Lloyd and carried. Air Smith then withdrew after thanking the Council for bearing him. INWARD OOKRESI'ONDENCE. From N.Z. Refrigerating Cov. From Airs Lincoln drawing attention to the state of the roadway in front of her property. Revel! St. and asking for attention.—Received: referred tod*ublii- Works Committee. Air Jeffries said it was a Borough road and it was its duty to keen its mails dear. Air Heinz said if the residents were to plant marram grass along the sea lii-acl* it would prevent much of tbe cause of comnlaint. From A. Namokivell. .asking lor water supply connection to bis residence. Stafford St.—Received; request From same, asking for suitable drainage arrangements of the property. Received: to be considered I’ter. From Board of Health, sb-tiug it had keen advis-d that it was urgentlv ltoecssarv m make arrangements tor carrying out of a proper drainage scheme. - Received ; to bo considered at a later date. Tbe Aluynr said the Coiiuci! was well aware of tbo position, and were anxious t - do whatever was possible to improve matters. He objected. however, to be dictated to by the Health Department. This was only a small town and its resources were too small to carry out all elaborate svstom ol sowonij/o.
From same, re refuse collection service. and asking what bad been done, and what was the intention of the Council therewith.- Received. The Mayor moved that a renlv he sent stating tin- matter was still under consideration. Seconded by Air Alackav. Air Perhani said lie thought in view of tin- great advance being made they should give it consideration. I hi-v wete even suing persons for leaving their motor cars in the streets (Laughter). The Finance Committee recommended payment of accounts totalling £236 Is (id and that a rebate of 5 per cent, be given on all rates paid within I t ,kivs of due date.- Received and adopted.' OVERSEER’S REPORT. On August RUh. the Chairman of Works and myself visited the site of proposed drain in Jollic Street, and measiit'i'd the distance from tbe font of kill across Stafford St. 5.', chains, and 3 chains inside reserve IT-nee to connect. nitli creek, a total distance of 0 chains. A rough estimate of cost ol construction and material was made. Pii'er-, timber, eemi-itt and laying with |Si ii. concrete nines (!) chains), at £2J iy-r chain. L'2t!7 : cutting ditch and filling at seven pound per chain. L'(>3: a, total of £270.
