NEW .MAN SHIELD. OHEY TECHNICAL *->li HOKITIKA :t. Greynioiitli Technical met the Hokitika Schools in a Newman .Shield game on Cass Square on Saturday afternoon at fl o’clock in perfect weather conditions. Although Greymouth were the winners by “II to fl. the game was a very interesting one. the scores being no index as t;i the nature of the game. The Grey hoys were veritable giants as compared with t-he Hokitika lioys. and it was their weight, and speed alone that accounted for their scores. Grey converted a penalty a few minutes after the ('Oiniiioncemcnt and a kick from a try was an excellent one. The Hokitika score was annexed just before Italfjiine and was set in motion l: ; v Hughes throwing out from the ruck to M. Da-vid-on. to Fleming to M- Davidson to S. Davidson, who worked his way over in the corner. Hughes made a good attempt at goal, hut the kick fell n little short. The Grey hacks handled well enough, hut were nothing like as
tricky or as slick as th" local hoys. Tin* local lads gave a splendid exhibition of foohalL and although the stare was
mounting they never once lost heart and time alter time throughout. the game had the Grey hoys in difficulties, hut did not have sufficient weight to fen e their advantage, and wT.ru .Grey broke through their speed was tin much for tin* whites. Grevwouth hail the advantage in the line-outs, naturally: and in the serums, the half ne'er failing to let his harks have the leather, hut sometimes there was a
weak link. M. Davidson was the ehaiupinn of the dal. being ever oil the hall. Some of his work, both in at tacit and defence, was exceedingly clever, whilst his eiil-ins were a treat to witness. Marks worked like a irnian thr iitglioiit and was a tower of strength to his side, his taek!ing being e-peeially good. Kjeniiny and llyilvie gave pond exhibitions ill attack and defence, the former securing several difficult marks. All the rest of the local team gave of their best, some net. gutting as many opportunities as others t > come within the yl'immcr of the limelight . Ihe whit es made a fatal mistake in their long kicks ill the first spell, but this was remedied in the M'e:it:d. lie (■rev hoys worked with a will, and nearly all "I them arc powerful kickers, wliiot. with the necessary foot, got the hiral lads into trouble mure than mice. -Mr A.
