In this ivnin'i-tinii it was a pleasure to riooul that tlio Minister had now recognised tl:o hoard’s hniltLin*i operations liv making a grant towards the oapital cost of the workshoi s. The Rebuilding Fund, which had up to the 1 resent enabled the hoard partly to finance remodelling and recount ruction of .s. ho-. !s, was now practically all allocated, and future vnrks of this description would depend solely on Government eranis. The Administration I account was now in a good position and generally speaking could safely meet all reasonable ealls upon it. ’I his did not mean that the hoard eonUt relax its vigikime. hut was an indieation that its alTair.s were being eoiulin leil with due regard to economy and ellit ieney. An important step recently taken in this direction had lioen the appointment of an officer whose duty it would he to supervise the purchase of supplies for the whole of the large district controlled hy the hoard. In that way it was Imped to effect I 1 nrther savinos. The following wore a few of tlie more important questions that would call for attention during the coining year:—The delay in filling vacancies on teaching staffs by tlie present method of appointment; tenders vetstis day labour in building operations; consolidation of sqhools and conveyance of pupils; method of election of committees in the smaller towns (verbal nominations); centralisation tendencies of the Department; a more satisfactory method of recompensing board members for time spent on board business: the standardisation. cost and supply of school books and requisites.
