The Guardian And Evening star, with winch is incorporated the West Coast Times. THURSDAY, AUGUST, 14th 1924. WESTLAND EXCLUDED.

That Westland is excluded from the benefits of expenditure carried on by the Tourist and Health Resorts Department is made palpaujly plain from tho departmental balance sheet figuring in a recent return presented to Parliament. In a statement of not loss on working accounts a deficiency of nearly £19,000 is shown. The following are the locations of the resorts wfiich returned this very substantial deficit for the year:

£18,986 12 0 The locations showing a net profit on the working pecount were;

The excess of expenditure over income, plus inteiest on capital invested was £13,081. Headers will look in vain lor any relcreiiee to expenditure on the Coast. Lavish expenditure is going oil elsewhere, but the Department fails to lind ways and means .o assist with Uie development ol resorts in Westland. It is all being left to private enterprise, which indicates that the Government is neglecting a ceutio where there is a reward lor well directed enterprise. .While this is so, it is none the less to be regretted that the Department is missing an opportunity to help itself as well as the district, and assist to provide visitors to tile Dominion, as well as icsidont holiday-makers, with more attractive resorts. Nature has been lavish in heights to AVestlaiid and if the beaut;, spots were made moio accessible, and special features brought into more general notice, the charm of the scenic glories would he more appreciated. It is regrettable certainly, that for so long and so markedly the Tourist and Health Department is oblivious to the Coast, and avoids investing money here to make the place more popular still, it the district wore, to some extent, under the direct control ol the Department if would he an indication to till' outside public that Westland was at least on the map, and was a scenic resort- of note sufficient to engage tho attention of the controlling autboiities.
