EX-KAISER’S WIRE TO KRUGER.
MOW IT CAME TO HE SENT. HERDIN'. June 18. The true story of the famous telegram sent by the ex-Kaiser to President Kruger on January 8, ISOS. afte. the .Jameson raid in South Africa, is revealed in the diary the late Huron von Marschall. On the day of the despatch of the telegram, the haron made the following entry:—
“At 10 o'clock conference with his Majesty, at which there were also present. the Chancellor (Prince lloheulohe), Hollmann, Knurr, and Senden (Admiral). lI.M. unfolds rather marvellous plan protectorate over Transvaal. out of which I at once talked him. Mobilisation of marines. Despatch of troops to the Transvaal, and to the Chancellor’s object ion “that would mean war with Kuglaml." lI.M. said. “Ves. but only on land." It is then settled to send Scheele ((Inventor of (lermun least Airica to Febrmtry 18!)d) to tile Transvaal for reconnoitring. Finally. II.M. advises a udegram of congratulation to President Kruger. “Joy at the defeat of Enghtiid is great."’ This remarkable extract from Marrchall's diary is given by Dr Frederick Thimine in an article, appearing in Fin opaerist hen (Ic.-gravche, on the Kruger telegram. It shows that William 11.. stirred by the soccers of the Jameson raid, wished to take measure:: which, in the opinion of Ilohenlohe. would have led to war with Kngland. and further that the idea of a telegram to Kruger was deliberately put into hi- head in order to dissuade him ir.mi such a plan ami in order to soothe him. Dr Thimine points out! that- the telegram idea came from Kayser, the director of Colonics, who whispered it to Marschall in the ante-room of the council chamber. The diaries of .Marschall and Senden have been given to Dr Thimine by relatives. and he i- able to show that, on the evening of the eventful day. William 11. regretted that he had sent the telegram and tried to got it hack. It was too late.
