THE KINGFISHER'S RUSE. The kingfisher is one of the most wonderful examples which Nature affords of “cainouilage.” At first- it might he thought that the brilliance of [ its colour—the a.".ure blue and green hack and the rusty red underneath—would render it one of the easiest birds to delect. This is. however, far from being the case. It one is fortunate enough to spot a kingfisher without being detected by the bird, its blue colour makes it quite easily discernible, but as it is being watched it suddenly vanishes without apparently moving. What happens is simple. When it discovers the presence of a stranger the bird turns round and faces him, tltus presenting in place of its brilliant blue back that russet red front which matches the brown bank or blends so exquisitely with the herbage as to make it practically invisible.
