Major Norton, the leader of the Everest Expedition, in a dispatch from ) atiing. discusses the question of whether Everest will ever be climbed, lie says: "It lias been proved that porters can carry the requisite loads to an altitude of nearly twenty-seven thousand feet, and no doubt, under favourable circumstances, a camp can be established at least live hundred feet higher. There is nothing to prevent the climber sleeping well at twenty-seven thousand feet and starting comparatively lit and well next day.” Major Norton concludes: “We of the 15124 expedition are confident that Everest can be climbed.” WOMEN’S OLYMPIAD. • LONDON, Aug. 1 Fifteen thousand were present at the Women’s International Athletic Meeting at Stanford Bridge.
