The House met at 2.30 p.m
Alter the disposal of formal business the debate on the budget was continued. Mr McKecn contended the Government's surplus was much larger than the budget disclosed, hut was reduced because of the clamour by tho Civil Service for the restoration of the cuts.
Mr Masters evuidomned the Government's management- of the soldier settlement’s.
Tile Hon. Mel.enn defended the soldiers .settlement administration, hut hinted that the comessions to the soldier settlers must come to tin end to give the voting men who have grown up since the war a chance of getting land to settle on.
Mr Bart.ram dealt- with the question of maternal mortality.
Mr Harris discussed Imperial Preference. arguing that preference would not lientfi Britain, hut would honefit the Dominions.
The debate was adjourned on the motion of Mr Lye and the House rose tit 1.45 till 2.30 on Tuesday.
