A FAMOUS LIFEBOAT.
file withdrawal from service of the lifeboat f.tueen by the J’oyal National l.ifeboat Institution recalls the history of this remarkable boat. which may lie regarded as the doyen of lifeboats. Alter twenty-six years continuous service at New IJrijyhlull, it is to lie replaced by a motor boat of modern de-ion, similar to the very larpe number of motor boats now in service around the Hritish coasts. The (,>ueen is a steam-propelled limit, and was httilt in ISOS hy Messrs John I. Thornveroft and Co., I.td., whose work- were then at Chiswick oil the Thames, prior to their heino transferred to Southampton. Her boilers were also lilted up hy them for oil lirin.o, this lioat heino the first to he so equipped hy Thornyerol’ts. who were pioneers in the development of oil fuel for marine boilers. Their system has since been very largely developed, and their oil-luel .sprayers have now been fitted io vessels exceedinp ‘J.otH 1,(1110 h.p., while of recent years they htive al.-o been extensively adopted for stationary boilers in preference to coal liriito.
