HOSPITAL BOARD ENQUIRY. DUNEDIN, July .29. The Hospital Hoard held an enquiry into the discharge of Thomas Pettit Kirk from tho hospital. Kirk was admitted to the hospital on July 10th suffering from a fractured shin hone. He was discharged on July Kith. At
the inquest the Coroner commented on the system of discharge. The man was given crutches, and, with his wife’s assistance. had to go three of four hundred yards to his home, the journey taking an Lour and a quarter. Death resulted from embolism.
The Hoard at the enquiry found that in view of the directly contradictory evidence it was unable to arrive at a definite conclusion as to the various incidents alleged against the members of the hospital staff. It further found that the regulations laid down for the discharge of patients wore not strictly adhered to in this ease, in-so-far as the house surgeon had only implied the instructions from the honorary surgeon. The Board will issue instructions for a more rigid compliance with the regulations.
I.MI'ORTATTON OF BALTIC SURUCI SAWMILL WORKERS' PROTEST INVERCARGILL. July 39. The Southland Sawmill Workers' Union decided to vigorously protest against the importation of foreign timbers and to bring the matter before the Premier and Labour leader. It was stated that the price of Baltic spruce, imported from Sweden for butler boxes, was below the cost of production of white pine, this being title to lower wages. Unless something was done it- was contended that a large number would become unemployed. TOURING OXFORD STUDENT'S. TO .MEET N.Z. DEBAT ING TEAMS. WELLINGTON. July 39. Word has been received that several Oxford students, who are members of lie University Debating Society, are to nuke a world tour, and among them is Malcolm MacDonald, son of the F.ngish Prime Minister. It is .suggested Tint they should meet debating teams rout our four University Colleges, and
tt proposal has been placed before the Students’ Association of Victoria College. It appears that there has been some dissatisfaction with the conduct of the debuting society at this college and a long and vigorous discussion was aroused hy a proposal that the debates should not be of a Bolshevik. Socialistic or disloyal nature. In the end. by a large majority, it was decided that the topic for a debate shall he subject to the approval of the executive of the St talents' Association.

A returned soldier. Arthur Conway, aged about 39. married, with one child, was cutting limbs from a large tree at Pictou yesterday afternoon when a falling branch carried away the ladder on which Conway was standing, and he fell some distance, dislocating his neck. He died in the hospital three hours later. A SERIOUS CHARGE. NAPIER. July 39. Edward George Melville was committed lor trial on a charge of assisting, his sou to escape, knowing the latter to he guilty of the crime of incest. It was stated that during the hearing that one daughter of accused, gave birth to one illegitimate and another daughter to three children. The police contended that the son was responsible for the births and was assisto lice the country. He is believed to la l in Australia.
