A serious accident happened to Mrs W'. Henisb (nee Miss Susan Wallace) at her residence Kanieri road on Wednesday afternoon. As the result ol the overturning of a kerosene tin ol boiling water the young lady was severely scalded on the shoulder and arm. She was removed to tile Westland Hospital for treatment where she is siidering considerably especially from shock. Advice received from South Westland this morning records the death at Doeheity Creek. Waihu. of Mr F.dward Cihb. senior, the well-known settler, which took place yesterday alter a protracted illness. Deceased was gl> years of age. and came to the Coast in the early days, being one of the fine band of pioneers who followed the n.in. ing rushes. He was a mate with Hon .1. Grimmond in the Blue Jacket mine at Ross in thu seventies, and later settled down at Waikukupa. in South Westland. F.ven there he followed mining at times and picked up some rich patches of black sand at Sandfly Beach, below Okarito. famous f. or its i ich deposits. He lias carried on grazing operations ever since, and h: s won th<‘ esteem of all who knew him for his honesty and uprightness. He leaves a large grown up family. There are three daughters (Miss Crate Gibb. Waikukupa. Miss Mary Gibb, attendant at tin- Mental Hospital and Mrs Foster of Matainui) and five nous, all well-known residents of South Westland.
