THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

Modernising tiii; Railways,

Two important items in the programme of modernising the railways in New Zealand are the subjects of statements by the Minister. It is gratifying to know that an enquiry has been (iiiiiinonced regarding the operation of suburban services, not only because it is necessary that the most economical method of traction should he employed, hut also because any .study of the question must direct the attention of the department to the need and the advantage of fostering a part ol its business that has been serious!v neglected. The other matter discussed by tile Minister was the revision of the goods larill, which is probably the most antiquated, tiling in the whole system. New Zealand Herald.
