West Coast Farmers' Lime Producing Co., Ltd.
A meeting of the Directors of the above named Company called for Saturday, July li’th was, owing to stormy weather, poorly attended. .Mr W.. J. Butler (Chairman of Directors) wired from Christchurch regretting that he was unable to get hack in time and Air John Fitzgerald of Totara Flat, who was in Auckland wired that his brother was seriously ill and he was unable to leave. Under the circumstances the Directors present considered it would ho unwise at present to fix the date for the annual general meeting of shareholders to he held in Greymoulh, hut that at a later date the meeting would he advertised. A considerable amount of routine Inici--io.-n was transacted and after lunch the Directors visited the lime works where (hey inspected the improvements now being carried out by the staff. In the past hundreds of tons of carbonate of lime every year had to he handled in the quarry and partly because wc had no means of drying it in large quantities and partly because there was not a large demand for it by farmers, we had to truck it out of the face and tip it into a large dump. AVe have felt when costing the time taken iji tho past handling carbonate of lime that it was not a paying proposition, hut next month we will he able to turn out carbonate of lime in large quantities when the C 7 per truck will soon pay for the cost of installing the carbonate plant. .Most of the business done at various lime works in Cantorlimy visited last month was in the sale of carbonate of lime, tanners considering that for renewing old pasture, the benefits of carbonate, lasting 7 years in the soil, it was more economical for them to use it, especially when they loot more time to devote to it during the winter months. For quick returns
in cropping by till means use agricultural (burnt) lime which spends its forte in the soil in about throe year*. A!any of the best brands of fertilizers on the market to-day contain up to •Ml", of lime and where the carriage of goad t is high it would be wise for the farmer only to buy such fertilizers as he requires to mix with his lime especially when he gets his lime carried free oil rail for 100 miles. When in Christchurch recently 1 interviewed various builders on building lime and found that the smaller men found a dillicnlty in getting supplies of Ross lime. The larger users of building lime said that from the time they ordered lime to the time of delivery took about seven days, so someone will have to speed up. To show what possibilities there arc for Boss building lime, 1 met a. man in Cathedral Square* who gave me an order for nearly 1 ,l)(!0 hags of building lime to he used in one contract lie had. Owing to the kiln lire having been out since the railway hold-up opportunity was tak-
en to make it more up-to-date by increasing the draught, through decreasing the outlet and saving much coal, y/e will he going full steam ahead at the ctx! of this month and as we have „.,!y T)D toils of orders in for August we' would advise all nun-shareholders lo out in their orders for August as -:.oo as i.'Ossible.
\Ye will do our best lor non-share-holders alter then, but when shareholders have honked their dates for delivery it is only natural that ibex should receive the preference lor deli, eiy. When consigning sinks for lime he "lie and pul the sender’name on the hack ot label and advise |, v letter when you are sending otherwise we will not he responsible for loss.
