West Coast Farmers’ Lime Producing Co., Ltd. -Mr John .Murdoch writes.—As .Secretary of the above named Company it gives me ureal pleasure to find that during my absence from the Coast there arc still some public spirited men who can keep the hall rolling for the benefit of the struggling settlers in South Westland. The following letter to the Minister of Agriculture from the Westland Agricultural and Pastoral Association speaks for itself. The day is evidently not very far distant when certain aspirants for parliamentary honours will address you. so I would advise every branch of the Farmers’ Union to appoint a representative to ask the candidate if he is in favour (should be be elected) of granting a subsidy on the carriage of lime and fertilizers (for a period of twelve months) to poor and struggling settlers in South Westland. Sir.—The Kxecutive ( onimittee of this Association was made aware at its meeting on the Hist ultimo of the application made to you by the settlers of the Waitaha and South Westland districts, for assistance in the matter of carriage of lime and fertilizers from Koss to their districts, and being fully cognisant of the dillieulties under which these people sutler ill the manner indicated, can with confidence support their appeal to you. Under ordinary , circumstances tlie (iovernmeni in their laudable consideration for and encouragement, of the primary producers, have provided for free carriage of lime over the railways to a distance of IDO miles. Aou are aware, ol course, that lloss is the terminus of the Westland railway—so that these settlers cannot avail themselves of that very useful concession—also that as lioss is the nearest available lime kiln for South Westland (but since your recent visit to Westland lias made you almost as well acquainted with local conditions and disabilities as we ourselves), ii is scarcely necessary for us to recapitulate tbelli. Yottr personal observations must also have impressed you of Die importance of lime as a factor m saving and improving the pastures of ibis province, whose staple indu-try will ede long be that of dairying, and you can therefore appreciate the anxiety with which settlers are endeavouring t„ obtain ibis indispensible fertilizer, the costlv transport of which makes it almost' prohibitive. When such settlers realise that their more fortunate fellows within easy reach of the railway can have their lime carried tree for u distance of I'll) miles their request for some like aid is, we re-peel-fullv submit, worthy of the best consideration at your bands, and we feel confident that your Department will succeed ill devising some method ol helping these pioneers who are so unfortunately placed in 'lie mattei ol road access. It is worthy of notice that the assistance is not sought b\ the lime producers hut by those who purclia»o and use it. This Assoc.at.on unhesitatingly supports the principle or th e W’iiitaha and South Westland Settlors’ appeal, leaving it in your hands t„ devise the method of granting it.
