ENGLISH BEAM STATION. LONDON, July 10. The ‘‘Daily Telegraph” understands yr*. a sub-committee of tile Cabinet are ;T dealing with wireless, and are discussing with Marconi tho question of theerection of a beam station in England to communicate with a similar station in Australia. It is believed the plan being negotiated proposes that Marconi’s erect a station, which the Government wiil take over subsequently, if the operation thereof is successful.
FLOODS IN CHINA. PEKIN, July To. Prolonged rains have caused swollen rivers to flood the provinces of Honan, Hunan, Anhui, and Kiangsi.
The devastation of hundreds of villages is causin'! thousands of deaths, and tremendous financial loss. Peltm itself is practically isolated, except for the Tientsin railway,, which is threatened with inundation in the i^j
meantime. Reports state Hie district of Kalian lias boon utterly destroyed, and the neighbouring railway is buried under the debris of landslides. Tientsin’s inundation is being prevented by an army of coolies, who are working feverishly to mend the weak- V died tlvkes. These constitute a danger point for all the cities, because of the vast volumes of water.
Engineers propose drastic measures to save Tientsin. They suggest cutting some of fhe dykes, and allowing the water to overflow into the neelands between Tientsin and Pekin.
