CONGRESS OF SURGEONS
HONOUR FOR NEW ZEALAND. WELLINGTON. July M. One of the most notable assemblages known to the medical and surgical professions throughout the world is the annual congress of ilia American College of Surgeons, held in \ew York. It embraces 2000 representatives from the United States, Canada, and South America. Tile latest developments in surgery are discussed. In past years it has been the practice to invite leading surgeons from Great Britain and Europe to bo present at the deliheartions. and to take part in them. As a result of the recent visit to Australia and Now Zealand of two loading American surgeons—T>r. Mayo, of the famous Mayo Clinic- at Rochester, U.S.A., and Dr. Martin, Controller of the American College of .Surgeons—several Australian and New Zealand surgeons have been invited to attend tho next annual congress to he held in New York on October 27th. next. Mayo and Martin attended the congress held in New Zealand recently, and visited the principal hospitals in the Dominion. The result of their visit has heen to make the progress made l»v the profession in Now Zealand better known in America, and the invitations have followed. The Minister of Health (the Hon. Sir Maui Pommel was invited to represent' Now Zealand in an official capacity at the congress, but replied ! that he regretted his inability to he present. Tfc is nil dors (,'ood that Sir Undo Ferguson, "ho was recently knighted, has heen asked to_ allow an honorary degree of the American College of Surgeons to he conferred on him. It is possible that other New Zealand surgeons intend to make tho trip to New York, hut their names have not heen officially notified. The British Medical Association in New Zealand are not officially aware whether auv of their members are going.
