A serious position will shortly have to lie faced in the timber indstruy in New Zealand, because of the importation of foreign timbers into the country. It is stated that Baltic spruce for tile making of butter boxes to tin* equivalent of IWO ,000 boxes has been lately landed, and as local timber maicliants are already finding it bard to obtain a market for white pine, it would appear that there it some truth in the story. Owing, to a much lower wages scale and the cost of production in Norway and Sweden, timber can be
hi ink'd in Now Zealand from tlieso countries and sold at a price that is prohibitive to New Zealand millers, and unless some restriction is placed on the importation of this timber it will mean, according to a local authority, cither a mluetion in wages tor New Zealand timber workers or the onlsing down ol many white pine mills.—N.
