An ex-governor of Hokitika gaol, Mr Matthew Michael Cleary died at Christchurch on Friday, aged itll years. Deceased was horn at Milltowu, County Clare. Ireland, ill 1831. He joined the Irish Constabulary at Dublin at the age of seventeen and was a sergeant at twenty, having -been specially promoted for saving life at Cork. Bosigning from the Constabulary in 18.17. Mr Cleary left for Melbourne, where he subsequently joined the police force, and remained there tiil 1801. On the outbreak of the Gabriel Gully gold rush the Provincial Government ot Otago organised a police force and Mr Cleary was appointed a sergeant on the goldfields when he came to New Zealand. However, he resigned from the jcjliec force and joined tin* prison service at Dunedin in 18(i3. and two months later was promoted to the rank of sergeant. In 18(i7 .Mr C'learv was appointed gaoler at Hokitika and held tin* position until 1882. when he obtained the governorship of the Mount Kden Gaol. A few months later, at his own request, he returned to his former position at Hokitika, and in November. 1888. was transferred to Lyttelton to take up the governorship of tin* prison there. He was in that position for many years. It was said of Mr Cleary that he had never smoked or tasted liquor and that he had never been absent from duty through illness.
