’The Molise of Lords Ly 10-5 vote's to •50 defeated the second reading of the Bishop of Dixford’s Popular Control of Liquor Bill, which gives the taxpayers the choice of voting “no change." “public control.” or Prohibition.
Lord Piirmcrir said that the Government supported the second reading in order that the Bill should he referred to the Standing Committee. The Primate and all the Bishops .supported the Bill, except the Bishop of Durham. Dr Hensley Henson, who caused a sensation in the House hv a vehement attack on the Bill, on the ground that it enshrined thoroughly the unsound principle of prohibition, and treated the Trade unfairly in exacting compensation by a method which was hypocritical and disguised confiscation.
In attacking his fellow Bishops. Dr Henson warned the Bishops and tho Church of t!u» danger of sham sins. The Bishop of Durham's vigorous mithurst moved the Conservatives to unwonted and enthusiastic applause. •
The Bishop of St Albans replied, and said that as long as Dr Heulev Henson graced the benches, episcopal unity was impossible.
